Bus Stop By William Inge Directed by David Schweizer Bus Stop written by the playwright William Inge was performed on Tuesday December 4th at Centerstage, the State Theatre of Maryland. The production explained the transformation and change of the characters throughout the show. Directed by David Schweizer, all the elements of the production came together to form the concept of transformation. The production of Bus Stop grasps the relevance of individuals finding themselves. I love nothing more than to stroll around the beautiful campus at State University. The scenery is breathtaking, especially with the promise of autumn about the air. During this particular time of the year, I find great enjoyment in taking a deep breath and inhaling the fragrant aroma of the surrounding nature. However, my enjoyment prematurely ends when the sudden smell of cigarette smoke engulfs me. Sound familiar? If you are a non-smoking student, this scene reflects everyday life on a smoking campus. Something must be done about this infringement upon non-smokers rights. Is our health so meaningless as to be put at the mercy of carcinogens and toxins? I think not. They tend to point out that the research and evidence concerning the subject is inconsistent. However, researc h studies such as above offer a complete rebuttal to this claim. How dangerous is second-hand smoke? The Indiana Prevention Resource Center also tells us that it contains more than 300 known poisons, including such deadly substances as nicotine, arsenic, cyanide, carbon monoxide, phenol, and formaldehyde (internet). According to a study conducted by the Department of Health and Human Services Center for Disease Control and Prevention, a thorough analysis of the many respiratory studies on the health effects of second-hand smoke concluded that it caused lung cancer among non-smokers (internet). According to Bill Alder and Steve Allen, the Environmental Protection Agency and Naval Research Laboratory estimated that between five hundred and five thousand non-smokers die each year of lung cancer alone from exposure to cigarette smoke (18). I, for one, am outraged by this! How can studies so obviously prove the dangers of second-hand smoke, yet action on campus against it is confined only to buildings and not applicable to the entire campus? We could react to those emotions by using food as natural painkillers to make us feel relaxed. They tell themselves that they need to eat more to get enough nutrients to get through whatever they are stressed about. However, they could find themselves unable o eat. When a person under eats, he or she is still more choosing fatty, sugary or salty food. Food does not just affect our body by providing nutrients; it also affects how we feel emotionally. This should be important to everybody to be able to know when to stop, and when we are eating because we just feel like we need to eat, not just because of hunger.
